Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, “Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.”
The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,“I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”
I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”
Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.
Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.Psalm 2
What a beautiful promise this is, especially during our current trouble! The nations do indeed conspire, the people plot in vain.
Our current Prime Minister has become enmired in scandal after scandal. We watched him abuse his position to demote then attorney general and justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybaud after she refused his plot to hide the corruption and fraud perpetuated by SNC-Lavalin. When Wilson-Raybaud resigned, two other female cabinet ministers resigned in solidarity.
Then there was the WE scandal, where Trudeau set up a charity to fund speaking engagements for himself, his mother and his brother.
In any other era, Trudeau would have had to resign. But the moral climate of Canada today proves that the people are willing to condone any kind of corruption! Perhaps the population is too busy watching the devastation perpetuated by rioters in the US to lift their heads and look around at what is happening here.
But the truth is, we are governed by godless leaders who repeatedly prove their desire to “throw off the shackles” of God’s law . From Trudeau’s cutting of funding to churches who refused to attest support of abortion as a Canadian value, to the Conservative party’s duplicity in using social conservatives for votes and then breaking every election promise in favour of liberalism, (I’m thinking particularly of Ontario, under flip-floppers Patrick Brown and Doug Ford).
But this sad reality is no reason for the Christian to fear. Just look at the promise in the next part of the Psalm. There is a King in Zion! Jesus is the King, and because of his substitution for us on the cross, we are adopted as children of God.
How amazing! How incredible. I was nobody, nothing. How could I ever hope to prevail against the great evil of men of power and influence? I could not… Until God adopted me as His own child. Now I am a precious child of the King.
And now, of whom should I be afraid? If God is for me, who will stand against?
Let’s take Psalm 2:10-12 as our memory verse today, and pray it over Justin Trudeau, and our other leaders. May they heed the warning, and may God soon bring His justice and mercy to Canada.
Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.
