Lord, I am afraid when I see the discord in our country. People of varying opinions don’t talk with one another. They create echo chambers that reflect back their own belief systems. They believe that anyone who disagrees is an enemy. Lord, I fear for our democracy, when the people cannot tolerate disagreement!
Disagreement is a vital part of understanding one another. Why must we label as evil (or misogynist, or racist, or hateful, or fear-mongering, or sheep, or stupid) instead of taking the time to listen and tolerate diversity of opinion? Lord, bring us back to the values of real love, true tolerance for those we disagree with, and the freedom to express our opinions and allow others to express theirs without becoming angry.
Lord, stop this media-manufactured wave of anger and intolerance from dividing our families. Bring peace between husbands and wives, between brothers and sisters, between parents and children, between households and neighbours. Lord, let the Christians rise up to demonstrate the love and peace of Jesus Christ, that everyone may see the light that You bring into our lives.
Drop the scales from our eyes, Lord. Raise up a body of believers with eyes to see and ears to hear. Raise up the Christians to see through the false divisions that the media is creating. Give us discernment, that we may easily recognize the lies of the enemy, and do not let us be dragged into anger, but help us to trust in You for the words to say and the actions to take.
Lord, make us a peace-loving people again, and stop the media from stirring us into a hateful frenzy. Don’t let us be divided, Lord, but heal our divisions.
Do not let us become a nation of name-callers. Make us instead a nation of listeners. Start with me, Lord. Help me to express my thoughts more kindly, and listen to others more patiently. And above all, make me an instrument of the gospel. Make it more important to me to speak the gospel than any other message. Raise up a whole nation of Christians who will stand for truth, who will speak truth in love, and who will exemplify the teachings of Christ in our loving, gentle words and actions. Raise up Your Body and equip us to do Your work, Lord.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.Ephesians 6:10-19
